D-U-N-S stands for Data Universal Numbering. The D-U-N-S® Number is D&B’s unique, nine-digit non-indicative numbering sequence, location-specific identifier, which D&B assigns as a means of identifying and tracking companies globally throughout their lifecycle. The D&B D-U-N-S® Number is assigned at the lowest organizational level, i.e. business locations with a unique, separate and distinct operation. The D-U-N-S® Number is assigned to all types of business organizations including sole proprietorships, corporations, partnerships, non-profits and government entities. The D-U-N-S® Number is constant; it is neither reused nor reassigned to another business. It stays with a business throughout the lifecycle including name, address and corporate structure changes and even bankruptcy.

D&B’s unique Worldwide Network of operations provides unrivalled depth and breadth of data collection. Through this network customers gain access to worldwide business information. The network consists of D&B wholly owned operations supplemented by a number of Alliances with other leading data providers – for example, Altares in France and Bisnode in a number of northern European countries. This network has helped achieve significant growth in the size of our database, leading to what is the largest commercially available database on companies worldwide. Data accuracy and consistency is maintained through the DUNSRight™ process.

The D&B network collects data from a number of sources to ensure comprehensive data coverage and accuracy. The data collected will vary from country to country depending on local restrictions for obtaining certain data elements.
